What Do You Know?
• When I say the term “Hip Hop”, what other words pop in your head?

ORIGINS
• This unique art form originated in America and it is one of the earliest dance forms originating on the street not in a studio with very little established vocabulary.

• “Hip-hop [is] rooted in the drums of Africa and the streets of America.” – Frank Hatchett
• The original hip hop dancers were known as street dancers and are now known as B-Boys or B-Girls. (Break boys and Break Girls).

• Influences began in early 1900’s such as Earl “Snake Hips” Tucker.

• Mainly in Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia during the 1960’s and 1970’s

• Groups that formed and performed together were called “Crews.”
• In the 1980’s Hip-Hop dancers became an international phenomenon as the style began being featured in music videos. Artists like Michael Jackson used Hip Hop choreography in his videos.

• Everyone started to learn some of the easier moves such as body rolls, chest pops, and waves

• Rather than trying to gain respect through violence, street dancers earned respect by showing off their art in dance battles.
• Hip Hop has influences of African tribal dance, jazz, tap, lindy hop, salsa, and martial arts.
Musical Influences
Fellow Street performers (Like drummers) as well as soul music artists (Such as James Brown) were early influences for Hip-Hop dancers.
Hip-Hop dance is tied closely to Hip-Hop music. (DJs and MCs) and rapping.

• Popping:

EAST COAST STYLES
• Breaking: Windmill, flares, freezes
• Also known as “Breakdancing” or
“B-boying/B-girling”,
Breaking originated in the streets of
New York City.
It is mostly comprised of floor work
that includes intricate footwork, freezes, gymnastics and spins.

• Uprocking:
“Uprock is a soulful, competitive street dance. The dance consists of foot shuffles, spins, turns, freestyle movements, sudden body movements called ‘jerks’ and hand gestures called ‘burns’.”
